Paper tax return deadline today: what if you haven’t filed?

For anyone completing a paper Self Assessment tax return for 2025/26, today—31 October 2026—is an important deadline.

HMRC must receive your paper return today

The standard deadline is 11:59pm on 31 October 2026. Posting your return today is not enough: HMRC must receive it by the deadline.

This return covers the tax year from 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026.

Haven’t filed? Check the online option

The standard online filing deadline is 11:59pm on 31 January 2027. If your paper return has not been submitted, check whether you can file online instead and which service or software you need.

Some circumstances require commercial software rather than HMRC’s own online service. See HMRC’s filing guidance.

Filing and paying are separate deadlines

For 2025/26, the normal payment deadline is 31 January 2027, including where you file on paper. Filing early helps you establish what you owe and plan ahead.

Different filing deadlines can apply, including where HMRC issues a later notice to file. Check your notice and the official deadline guidance.

Don’t ignore a missed deadline

Under HMRC’s standard Self Assessment late filing rules, the initial penalty is £100, with further penalties as the delay continues. Late payment can also attract interest and penalties. Read HMRC’s penalty guidance.
